Lysa Flores - Named by Newsweek as, “One of the 20 Young Latinos to Watch In The New Millennium," Lysa was born and raised in the city of East Los Angeles where she is recognized as one of the early contributors of the areas exploding music scene in the early 90’s. Lysa is also an accomplished Actress, Activist, Producer and Print Maker. A first generation Xicana, her parents hailing from the state of Jalisco, Mexico, Lysa started her first business by opening up a storefront in Rowland Heights selling shoes and records at the age of 16. At 17 she started her career in music by joining the band The Longfields then eventually forming her own band at the age of 19 with DJ Bonebrake as her first drummer in 1993. Lysa created her own record label “Bring Your Love” in 1997.
Musically, Lysa has toured the US, Mexico, Egypt and Europe extensively while also collaborating with musical luminaries such as Tex-Mex legend Flaco Jimenez, Indie-rock legend Jonathan Richman, Punk Icons Alice Bag and John Doe, song writer Peter Case, guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer DJ Bonebrake, front man for Los Lobos David Hidalgo and of course performance artist Robert Lopez (aka El Vez). Lysa has 3 previously released solo albums — “Tree of Hope” in 2000, “The Making of A Trophy Grrrl” in 2004 and “Bring Your Love” in 2008. She was the musical producer for the score and soundtrack to the film, “Star Maps” the only known female at this time accomplish this — most notably for introducing the crossover of Mexican rock and American rock on a soundtrack to an American movie. Her most recent work was producing the debut album for punk icon Alice Bag set for release later this year in July 2016.
As an actress, Lysa's premier role in the 1997 critically acclaimed film, “Star Maps," garnered her a, “Best Debut Performance," from the Independent Spirit Awards. She followed that up with a lead role in a theater performance titled, “The Furthest Room” - An adaption of her album, “Tree of Hope," which resulted in sold out performances for 6 continuous weeks. Lysa also appeared as a supporting actress in the 2002 film, “Menace”, in the 2000 short film, “Greenlight Yourself” and the Telenovela "Reyes y Rey." Her latest appearance will be in the video to an Alice Bag song titled, “No Means No”.
As an artist, Lysa has used the studios at Self Help Graphics in Los Angeles to produce limited screen prints for her “Making of A Trophy Girrrl” cover as well limited edition self portraits. Her serigraph art is featured in the book, “Self Help Graphics and Art - Art in the Heart of East Los Angeles”. Lysa’s photographed image was selected to be used as the covers for two books, “Calligraphy of the Witch” and “A Latina in the Land of Hollywood and Other Essays on Media Culture”. Lysa has also been photographed and written about in many magazines throughout the years. She is featured in the books, “Land of A Thousand Dances” and “Loca Motion - The Travels of Chicana and Latina Popular Culture”.
Lysa as an activist, is a title that has always been at the forefront of her body of work since the beginning of her career. Actively participating with local women’s shelters, championing women’s and minorities rights and more recently raising her daughter as a single mom.
